Deep-cycle batteries are used in almost every off-grid application using solar, wind or other alternative charging sources. Multiple batteries wired together in order to increase amp-hour capacity or reaching desired system voltage is referred to as a "battery bank".
These battery banks, traditionally equipped with lead-acid batteries, are designed to be regularly deeply discharged or "cycled" utilizing a majority of the battery's capacity. In contrast to starter or "cranking" automotive batteries which only deliver a small part of capacity in a short, high current burst for cranking the engine.
Battery maintenance and depth of discharge (DOD) can greatly affect the lifespan of your batteries. This is where system sizing and a battery management system can prove crucial.
As technology advances, everything seems to pack more performance in a smaller package. Lithium batteries is an exact representation of that concept. In a broad overview, compared to its ancestors, lithium batteries are relative
to about a factor of 4 or 1/4's. Meaning that these batteries, while take up about 1/4 of the weight and space yet pack in 4 times the power & lifespan of lead acid/AGM, comes with a price tag of about 4 times the cost; generally speaking.
With that type of investment into a system, you would expect to be able to monitor and manage that power; which is exactly what the battery management system (BMS) does.
